Why Won't My Jet Ski Start? 7 Common Causes
You're ready to hit Lake Bridgeport, the trailer's hooked up, the sun is shining — and your jet ski won't start. Before you panic, here are the 7 most common reasons we see at Bridgeport Ski Daddies, and what to do about each one.
1. Dead or Weak Battery
This is the #1 cause of no-starts, especially after winter storage. Marine batteries degrade faster than car batteries due to vibration, heat, and moisture. If your jet ski cranks slowly or clicks but won't turn over, the battery is the first thing to check.
Fix: Test voltage with a multimeter (should read 12.6V+ fully charged). If below 12V, charge or replace. Use a battery maintainer during storage to prevent this. Need a battery replacement?
2. Old or Bad Fuel
Fuel left sitting for more than 30 days without stabilizer degrades — especially ethanol-blended gas. It absorbs moisture, turns to varnish, and clogs injectors and fuel filters. If your ski smells like old paint thinner, the fuel is bad.
Fix: Drain the old fuel, clean the fuel system, and refill with fresh gas. Add marine fuel stabilizer to every fill-up going forward. Fuel system service can restore flow.
3. Fouled or Worn Spark Plugs
Spark plugs wear out over time, especially if the engine runs rich or idles frequently. A fouled plug won't ignite the fuel mixture, causing a no-start or rough running.
Fix: Pull the plugs and inspect. Black, oily, or worn plugs need replacement. This is a quick, inexpensive fix. Part of every tune-up.
4. DESS Key or Security System Issue (Sea-Doo)
Sea-Doo uses a DESS (Digitally Encoded Security System) key that must communicate with the ski's computer. A weak key battery, corroded post, or programming error will prevent start.
Fix: Clean the DESS post, try a backup key, or have the key reprogrammed. We handle Sea-Doo DESS diagnostics.
5. Fuel Pump Failure
If you hear the engine crank but it won't fire, and the spark plugs look fine, the fuel pump may not be delivering fuel. Listen for a brief whine/hum when you turn the key to "on" — that's the fuel pump priming. No sound = likely pump failure.
Fix: Test fuel pressure and replace the pump if faulty. This is a common fix on older jet skis.
6. Clogged Fuel Filter or Injectors
Ethanol damage and sediment can clog the fuel filter or gum up injectors. Symptoms: hard starting, rough idle, or starting then immediately dying.
Fix: Replace the fuel filter and have injectors cleaned. Fuel system service covers this.
7. Safety Lanyard Not Connected
This one catches even experienced riders. The safety lanyard (kill switch) must be properly attached for the engine to start. If it's disconnected, damaged, or the magnetic clip isn't seated, the ski won't fire.
Fix: Check that the lanyard is properly connected and the clip is seated. Replace damaged lanyards.
