What Sellers Don't Tell You

- Fresh paint hiding gel coat cracks and fiberglass repairs
- New batteries masking a dead charging system
- "Low hours" with a replaced hour meter
- "Runs great" machines with 80 PSI compression (should be 150+)
- Clean exterior with a seized impeller shaft underneath
- "Just needs a battery" that actually needs a $1,500 engine rebuild
- Compression test — The single most important indicator of engine health. Low or uneven compression means internal engine problems.
- Electrical system check — Battery load test, starter, alternator/stator, gauges, wiring condition.
- Cooling system inspection — Impeller condition, thermostat, hoses, water flow.
- Fuel system assessment — Tank condition, fuel lines, injectors, evidence of ethanol damage.
- Hull inspection — Cracks, repairs, gel coat condition, intake grate, ride plate.
- Steering and throttle — Cable condition, play, functionality.
- Trailer check — Bearings, tires, lights, winch, coupler (if trailer is included).
- Overall condition assessment — Maintenance history indicators, abuse signs, red flags.
- Everything checks out? Buy with confidence.
- Minor issues found? Negotiate $500–1,000 off the asking price.
- Major issues found? Walk away and thank yourself for the inspection fee.
- Seller won't allow an inspection? That's your answer — walk away.
- Compression within spec (typically 140–160 PSI, even across cylinders)
- Recent service records or evidence of regular maintenance
- Clean fuel system with no varnish or ethanol damage
- Good battery that holds a charge
- Impeller and wear ring in good condition
- Hull free of significant cracks or poorly done repairs
- Needs impeller + wear ring: $400
- Fuel system cleaning: $300
- New battery + starter: $350
- Low compression (needs top-end rebuild): $1,200
